Harley Street Breast Care consults at 146 Harley Street, W1G 7LD, a little over two miles west of Islington. Angel to King’s Cross is one stop, then two more to Great Portland Street. Consultation, imaging and, where needed, biopsy and results are completed in one sixty to ninety minute visit.
Islington sits a little over two miles east of Harley Street, and the connection is better than the map suggests: Angel to King’s Cross is one stop, and King’s Cross to Great Portland Street is two more on the same westbound platform. Great Portland Street is five minutes on foot from our consulting rooms at 146 Harley Street, W1G 7LD. A same-day one-stop breast clinic appointment takes sixty to ninety minutes from arrival to the results discussion.
The reasons N1 patients come to us are much the same as anywhere else — a lump, pain, discharge, a screening decision, a diagnosis that wants a second look — but the mix skews towards people who are paying for themselves and want to know what they are committing to before they commit. That is a reasonable thing to ask, and it is answered on the phone rather than at the desk. All our London locations are listed together.
Islington is one of the few areas where the bus is a serious contender: the 30 and the 205 both run from N1 along the Euston Road corridor and stop within a few minutes of the clinic, with no changes at all. For driving, the directions and parking for 146 Harley Street cover the car parks, the drop-off point and where the Congestion Charge boundary falls.

Islington is well covered by the NHS — the Whittington and University College Hospital are both close, and the breast services at each are good. What people come to us for is the shape of the pathway rather than the standard of it. On a two-week-wait referral the examination, the imaging and the result arrive as three separate events. Privately they arrive as one, which removes the part of the process most people find hardest: the waiting in between, when there is nothing to do and nothing yet to know.
The second difference is that you choose the surgeon and keep them. A good number of our Islington patients are self-funding rather than insured, so it is worth saying plainly that no referral letter is needed to book, and that the cost of a one-stop attendance is confirmed before you come rather than afterwards. If a policy is paying, the insurer will want a GP referral and a pre-authorisation number first. Surgery takes place at one of the private hospitals we work with in Marylebone, with directions and parking for The London Clinic if that is where your admission is arranged.
Your care is led by Mr Debashis Ghosh, Consultant Breast & Oncoplastic Surgeon. He has been a consultant since 2012, holds dual European Board certification in Breast Surgery and Surgical Oncology, and holds a substantive NHS consultant post at Royal Free London with an academic appointment at UCL Medical School. Sentinel node biopsy, wire-free tumour localisation and oncoplastic reconstruction are part of routine practice rather than exceptions to it.
From N1 the door-to-door time is about half an hour whichever route you pick, so a 09:00 appointment means leaving Angel around half past eight. The 30 and the 205 both run along Pentonville Road and the Euston Road and stop a few minutes from the building, which is worth knowing on a day when the Northern line is disrupted.
Registration is short. The consultation begins with your history — how long the change has been there, whether it varies with your cycle, what your family history is — and then examination. Imaging follows in the same building, and if the imaging raises a question a needle biopsy is taken during the same attendance. You are told what the examination and imaging show before you leave. Where a sample has gone to the laboratory, the histology follows separately and a discussion is arranged for it, usually within a few days.
One stop south on the Northern line to King’s Cross St Pancras, then two stops west on the Circle, Metropolitan or Hammersmith and City line to Great Portland Street, which is five minutes on foot from the clinic. That is about fifteen minutes of travelling. If you would rather not change at all, the 30 and 205 buses run from Islington along Pentonville Road and Euston Road and stop within a few minutes of the door.
Probably, but it depends where in N1 you start. The northern boundary of the Congestion Charge zone follows Pentonville Road and City Road, so most of Islington sits just outside it while Harley Street is inside, and a weekday journey south between 07:00 and 18:00 crosses the line. The whole of Greater London is inside the ULEZ as well. Q-Park Harley Street on Queen Anne Mews, W1G 9HF, is the nearest underground car park, open around the clock with a 1.82 m height limit.
Usually within a few days, and often sooner. A breast lump assessment is the single most common reason people come to us, and it is the situation the one-stop format was designed for: examination, imaging and, if the imaging raises a question, a biopsy on the same visit. Most lumps turn out not to be cancer, and the same appointment also covers breast pain and nipple discharge if that is what brought you in. You do not need a GP referral letter to book as a self-funding patient.
