What does consultant-led breast care in London actually mean?

Harley Street Breast Care is a consultant-led private breast clinic in central London. We see patients from across the capital at established Harley Street medical addresses, and our model is built around a single question: how quickly can you get a clear answer? For most people the answer is one visit. Our same-day one-stop breast clinic brings consultation, clinical examination, imaging and, where it is needed, biopsy and a results discussion into one appointment that typically runs 60–90 minutes from arrival.

Care is led by Mr Debashis Ghosh, Consultant Breast & Oncoplastic Surgeon, who has practised as a consultant since 2012 and holds dual European Board certification in Breast Surgery and Surgical Oncology — an uncommon combination among UK breast surgeons. He works alongside breast radiologists, pathologists and oncologists, so a diagnosis and a treatment plan come from a specialist team rather than a single opinion.

Where exactly will I be seen?

All consultations, imaging and one-stop assessments take place at 146 Harley Street, in the Harley Street medical district. Full travel, parking and step-free access detail for each address sits on our how to find us pages.

How do most patients reach the clinic?

A lump found at home, seen the same week

The most common reason people call is a lump or a change they have found themselves. There is no requirement to wait for an NHS referral pathway before being assessed privately. A patient can call in the morning, be examined and imaged the same week, and in most cases leave the appointment knowing whether anything further is needed. Where a biopsy is taken, histology takes longer and results are discussed once the laboratory has reported.

A screening mammogram outside the NHS age range

The NHS Breast Screening Programme invites women within a defined age band. Patients who fall outside it, who have a family history, or who simply want screening on their own schedule, come to us for private breast imaging with a consultant review of the report rather than a letter through the post.

A second opinion on an existing diagnosis

Patients already under treatment elsewhere — in London, elsewhere in the UK or overseas — ask us to review imaging, pathology and a proposed surgical plan. This is a formal service, not an informal chat, and it is one of the reasons patients travel to Harley Street from outside London.

How do I pay, and do you take insurance?

Harley Street Breast Care offers transparent self-pay pricing alongside private medical insurance options, with consultation and diagnostic fees published for patients. The current initial surgeon consultation fee is £350. One-stop packages are published separately and currently include consultation with mammogram at £499, consultation with ultrasound at £499, a lumps package at £750, mammogram only at £325, ultrasound only at £345 and breast implant assessment at £350. Always check the service page for the current figure before booking.

We accept self-funding patients and the major private medical insurers, including Bupa, AXA PPP Healthcare, Aviva, Vitality, WPA, Cigna, Healix, Freedom Health, Allianz Worldwide, Simplyhealth and Alliance Health Group. If you are claiming, check with your insurer whether a GP referral letter and a pre-authorisation number are required before your first appointment.

What if I am travelling from outside London?

A significant share of our patients travel in for the day, either from elsewhere in the UK or from overseas. The Harley Street medical district is well placed for this: it sits within a short taxi or Underground journey of Paddington, King's Cross St Pancras and Marylebone, and Heathrow is reachable by Heathrow Express and one Underground change. If you are coming a long way, tell us when you book — we will try to group imaging and consultation into a single visit so that one journey is enough.

Questions about visiting the clinic

Do you have more than one clinic location?
Consultations, imaging and one-stop assessments all take place at 146 Harley Street, London W1G 7LD. If surgery or inpatient treatment is recommended, it is carried out at a partner private hospital, and your consultant will tell you which site and arrange the details.
Which is the nearest Underground station?
Regent’s Park on the Bakerloo line is four to six minutes on foot, and Great Portland Street on the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines is five to seven minutes. Baker Street, Oxford Circus and Bond Street are all within a fifteen minute walk.
Do I need a GP referral to book?
Not if you are funding your own care — you can contact the clinic directly. Most private medical insurers require a GP referral letter and pre-authorisation before they will settle an invoice, so arrange both before your appointment if you are claiming.
How long should I allow for a first appointment?
Sixty to ninety minutes for a one-stop assessment, which covers consultation, clinical examination, mammogram or ultrasound as indicated, a biopsy where it is needed, and a discussion of the findings. Where a biopsy is taken, histology follows separately once the laboratory has reported.
